Give your gun the care it deserves this season. A clean gun is a safe gun, and a quick routine after every outing keeps it working well for years to come. It only takes a few minutes, and it becomes second nature in no time.
First, and always, make sure the gun is unloaded and safe before you start, with the action open and the barrels checked clear. Never clean a gun until you are certain it is empty.
1. Clear the barrels. Wipe the barrels inside and out to remove fouling and any moisture from the day.
2. Oil, then dry. Run a lightly oiled patch through each barrel, then follow it with a dry one to leave a thin, clean film.
3. Wipe down the rest. Go over the action and the stock with a soft cloth to lift off dirt, moisture and fingerprints.
4. Store it properly. Put it away in a dry cabinet, muzzle down, and well away from any damp.
Fifteen minutes now saves a lot of bother later. Regular care keeps the barrels bright, stops rust taking hold, protects the woodwork and keeps everything moving as it should, so your gun stays reliable and holds its value for years.
