Few names in British airgunning carry the weight of Theoben. Founded in 1983 by Ben Taylor and Dave Theobald, whose names combined to form the company, Theoben invented the gas ram: a nitrogen-filled cylinder that replaced the traditional coiled spring. It was a genuine leap forward. Gone were the spring twang, the torque and the vibration, replaced by a smoother, quicker firing cycle, better shot-to-shot consistency, and an action that could be left cocked for long periods without losing power, a real advantage in the field.
From the original Sirocco came the Grand Prix and the Olympus, the Eliminator and Crow Magnum, the Fenman, and the acclaimed Rapid series of pre-charged rifles whose buddy-bottle design changed what shooters expected from an air rifle. Built in England to a standard of engineering and chemical bluing that few could match, Theobens were bought to be used and handed on.
The original company closed its doors in 2011, but the reputation has only grown. Theoben rifles remain among the most sought-after airguns in Britain, prized by collectors and shooters alike for their craftsmanship and for the innovation that every gas ram made since owes a debt to.
