Twelve times magnification is only worth having if there is light enough to support it. Wind a 4-12×40 to the top and the beam reaching your eye narrows to 3.3mm, which is ample at noon and thin at dusk. The fifty-millimetre bell holds 4.2mm at the same power, and that difference is what lets you keep the magnification as the light goes instead of winding back down to find your target. Add red or green illumination over five levels, an objective focusing to nine metres and mil dots for holdover. Six hundred grams is the price of leaving nothing out.
