Thirty-five per cent cotton in the face is what separates this from a purely synthetic waterproof. Cotton takes the shine off, softens the handle and quietens the cloth, so the trousers look and sound like country kit rather than hillwalking gear, while the membrane laminated behind still does the waterproofing. Polyester pads are set in at the places a beater’s trousers actually wear through. Six pockets, two of them cut for cartridges and one for a knife. Preformed knees, a waistband that stays put, and a reproofing spray now and again to keep the face shedding water.
