Your mental health and your certificate: a reassuring word

A reassuring word this week, and an important one, because it is something that stops too many people from getting the help they deserve.

Seeking help for your mental health does not automatically put your shotgun or firearm certificate at risk. Police licensing teams and health services have been clear on this.

Each case is looked at fairly

Many certificate holders have been treated for things like anxiety, stress or low mood and kept their certificates. Every situation is considered individually, on its own facts, and in confidence. Getting support is not, in itself, a reason to lose your certificate.

The key thing is to be open

If something is affecting you, talking to your licensing team is always better than staying quiet. Being open is looked on far more favourably than a matter coming to light later, and it lets everyone deal with things sensibly and fairly.

If you are struggling, please reach out

Most of all, if you are having a hard time, please do not carry it alone. Speaking to your GP, or to someone you trust, is a good first step, and support is always there. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and it will not cost you the thing you love doing.
