Tartan is so nearly always wool that a cotton and linen one takes a moment to place. The difference is season. This is light and it breathes, which makes it a scarf for April and September rather than January, when lambswool is more than you want round your neck. It hangs differently too, crisper and flatter than wool, and it creases the way linen does, which is part of the character rather than a fault in it. The check is Barbour’s own, light enough to knot small at the throat or leave open over a shirt.
