Pale straw looks wonderful for about a fortnight. Dark tan is the summer hat you can wear through a whole season of shows and put on again the year after, because it does not show every mark it picks up between the car and the ring. The crown is cut away in an open pattern, which is not only decoration: heat leaves through the top of the head first, and this lets it go. Four and a half centimetres of brim shades the eyes without tipping over into holiday wear. A herringbone band carries a Barbour stud, there is a tartan headband inside, and it runs small to extra large.
