A wellington is cold, unyielding rubber, and the place it makes itself felt is the calf, where the shaft rubs with every step. A short sock leaves that skin bare. These come to the knee, so there is wool between you and the boot the whole way up, and the wool is Merino, fine enough in the fibre not to prickle against a shin. The toe seam is knitted flat, which matters more in a wellington than in a shoe: the boot will not flex with your foot, and a ridged seam becomes a blister by the afternoon.
