A whistle is no use in a pocket. A lanyard keeps it at your chest where it can be at your mouth in half a second, which is what matters when a dog is running on and you have one chance to stop it. This is the traditional sort, made up in 3mm nylon cord: hard-wearing, light enough that you forget you have it on, and long enough to go over a hat. There is a snap hook for the whistle and a swivel above it, so the cord does not wind itself into a knot over a morning of training.
