Every other gilet on the rack is at its best the day you buy it. Wax works the other way about. This one is cut from six-ounce Sylkoil, which is Barbour’s drier and more supple wax, so it has none of the tackiness of the old thornproof and it weathers to a dry matte finish that looks better the more it is used. Reproof it every year or two and it will see out most of the wardrobe. Corduroy collar, bellows pockets, lined handwarmers, a two-way zip beneath a studded storm flap, and a little padding through the body.
