AO stands for adjustable objective, and it is the reason this one will do for an air rifle where the three-nines will not. Parallax comes down to nine metres, so the picture stays sharp and the aim honest at the distances air rifles are actually used. The adjustment sits on the front bell rather than at your side, which means reaching forward and coming off the stock to use it: slower than a side wheel, and a good deal cheaper. Four to twelve also gives more magnification than the three-nines for picking a small mark apart.
