Twelve times magnification is only worth having if there is light enough to support it. Wind a 4-12×40 to the top and the beam reaching your eye narrows to 3.3mm, which is ample at noon and thin at dusk. The fifty-millimetre bell holds 4.2mm at the same power, and that difference is what lets you keep the magnification as the light goes instead of winding back down to find your target.
