A gun stocking is not simply a long sock. It is pulled up over the calf beneath a pair of breeks and then turned back below the knee, and that fold is what holds it there, with garter ties through it if you are being proper about the thing. The contrast top is therefore the only part on show, sitting between the breek buckle and the boot, which is why Barbour have put the colour there and at the heel and toe. Seventy-four per cent wool, largely Merino, with polyamide run through so the heel does not wear away by February.
